2 Shuttered Hospitals Sold To Separate Buyers

Two rural Virginia hospitals closed by their former owners were purchased this week.

Lee County on Tuesday sold its shuttered hospital for $2 million to a Florida startup that is expected within months to seek state approval to reopen it.

The deal required Americore to pay the Lee County Hospital Authority $500,000 at closing and to begin in its third year of operation to pay off the balance. Americore must also shoulder costs to equip and staff the Pennington Gap hospital and to navigate the licensing process.

Then on Wednesday, Virginia Community Capital purchased for $5.7 million the recently closed Pioneer Hospital in Patrick County at a foreclosure auction. The bank had loaned Pioneer Health Services $6.7 million to renovate the building before Pioneer, based in Mississippi, filed for bankruptcy.
