New I-564 Link To Port Of Virginia's Expanded North Gate At NIT Has Low Profile, Or None, On Online Maps

The new four-lane spur connecting the expanded North Gate of the Port of Virginia’s Norfolk International Terminals to Interstate 564 has been open to truckers for about two weeks – long enough to put it on the map, right?

Yet a Pilot reader who has been following the coverage of what’s called the I-564 Intermodal Connector recently checked online maps to see whether he could find out more about it and didn’t have a whole lot of luck – not on Google Maps, Bing or Mapquest.

Initially, he couldn’t even find it on the Google Map embedded on the port’s own NIT “Maps + Directions” webpage or any other information about the new interstate link there for that matter.

“I find it interesting that the NIT website does not provide information on the new gate or spur on their website or directions to it,” wrote Don Plaster, a Virginia Beach-based IT consultant and mapping enthusiast, in a Jan. 2 email to The Pilot.
