Senate Bill Would Grant Unused Coalfields Schools A Second Chance

Shuttered schools in Virginia’s coalfields region may soon get second lives.

Legislation proposed by Sen. Ben Chafin, R-Russell, would allow localities in far Southwest Virginia to turn abandoned schools into tax-free zones in the hopes of attracting private businesses to purchase and develop the properties.

School districts in far Southwest Virginia have struggled as families leave in search of jobs. As more people leave, more schools close.
