Ship To Arrive In Port Of Virginia Early Friday From Poland, With First Of 86 New Cranes

If you’re driving over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel before dawn on Friday and think you see a ship carrying what look like Imperial Walkers from the “Star Wars” flicks, don’t freak out.

You’ll be among the first in the region to catch a glimpse of a half-dozen new “rail-mounted gantry cranes,” or RMGs, bound for Virginia International Gateway in Portsmouth.

The heavy-load vessel Happy Buccaneer left the Port of Gdynia, Poland, on Jan. 12, bearing the first of 86 of the cranes to make the roughly 4,300-mile journey to Hampton Roads over the next couple of years.

The ship is expected to arrive sometime around 5 a.m. Friday. You can track its progress by searching for the vessel at www.marinetraffic.com.
