Salem GE Plant Cuts 42 Jobs

GE Power in Salem announced a layoff of 42 hourly workers effective March 2, a union official said Tuesday.

The 15 percent cut will reduce the hourly workforce to 235.

The information was provided by Vicky Hurley, president of Local 82161 of the International Union of Electronic, Electrical, Salaried, Machine and Furniture Workers — Communications Workers of America, and later confirmed by the company.

Hurley said GE Power hired hourly personnel in Salem in 2012, 2013 and 2014. In 2015 through 2017, the company neither hired nor cut, though the workforce shrank due to workers taking voluntary retirement packages, she said.
