Mount Airy Board Approves Operating Agreement With Barter

A proposal to expand the Barter Theatre into North Carolina moved forward on Thursday when the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners approved an operating agreement.

Mount Airy Mayor David Rowe and Commissioner Steve Yokeley confirmed that board members voted 3-2 in favor of approving the agreement between the city and the theater.

The city plans to develop the former Spencer’s Mill industry property in Mount Airy into a hotel and conference center, an apartment complex and a 500-seat Barter theater. The building is a block off of the city’s Main Street.

“They want us to be the third component of the building,” Producing Artistic Director Richard Rose told the Bristol Herald Courier last month. “The partners involved wanted us [Barter] because of our brand, because of the product that we have, the shows that we do … and what we stand for.”
