Firm Sent Back To Drawing Board For Airport Acres Construction In Blacksburg

A Martinsville-based firm will need to return to the drawing board in regards to its plans to build on some Airport Acres land that it has owned since 2003.

Reflecting the views of most of the residents who spoke out against a project proposed by the Lester Group, the Blacksburg Town Council voted 4-2 Tuesday night against a request to rezone nearly 6 acres of Airport Acres land from low-density residential to planned residential.

Mayor Leslie Hager-Smith and Councilwoman Lauren Colliver were the two members who voted in favor of the rezoning. Councilwoman Susan Mattingly abstained, citing a potential conflict of interest due to the Lester Group’s ownership of the Lyric Theatre building. Mattingly is the Lyric’s executive director.
