Excel Inn Owners Propose Boutique Hotel To Replace Burned Structure

The owners of a motel that was heavily damaged in an accidental fire last spring are planning to redevelop the property and build a new boutique hotel at the site near University of Virginia Grounds.

Ten months after the May 4 blaze burned the family-owned Excel Inn & Suites on the 100 block of North Emmet Street, an entrance corridor for both Charlottesville and UVa, city officials are now reviewing the proposed redevelopment project.

“Our hearts were shattered, and this continues to be a difficult time for my family,” says a letter that business owner Vipul Patel sent to city officials concerning the project. “However, we find comfort in knowing this is not the end, but the opportunity for a new beginning.”
