City Council Eyes Hiking Lodging Tax Rate

Charlottesville’s City Council on Monday night will decide whether it wants to increase the city’s lodging tax rate from 7 percent to 8 percent. City staff predicts changing the rate will increase revenue in the next fiscal year by about $730,000.

At a budget work session Thursday, following a discussion about policy changes that incur expenditures increases in the proposed $179.3 million budget for fiscal year 2019, staff told the council that it must make a decision about the lodging tax rate by Monday.

If the council decides to advertise a higher lodging tax rate, the decision will not be final. But staff will begin amending the budget to increase projected revenues and expenditures prior to its scheduled final approval April 10.
