Microsoft To Expand Investment In Southside With New Civic Programs

Microsoft is doubling down on its investment in Southside Virginia, announcing plans to use its corporate clout to help pull the region into the digital age.

The technology giant has already built a data center in Mecklenburg County and has been working for the past year to expand internet access to the nearby former tobacco fields. Now, the company is preparing to launch a slew of new programs in that part of Virginia.

It’s all part of the new TechSpark initiative, spearheaded by Microsoft President Brad Smith. The company recently chose six communities to receive special attention, including southern Virginia. Microsoft defines the region as Halifax, Mecklenburg, Brunswick, Lunenburg and Charlotte counties.
