Owners' Vision For Fredericksburg Square's Future Include Potential Boutique Hotel

It was built as a residence in 1854, added onto when it became an Elks Lodge, and now serves as a popular wedding and events venue in downtown Fredericksburg.

The owners of Fredericksburg Square, the handsome brick building at 525 Caroline St., are hoping to find a buyer who will eventually take over their business or create a new use for the local landmark.

“The time has come to think about retirement,” Van Perroy said during a Fredericksburg Economic Development Authority meeting Tuesday at the property. “We’ve talked to the city about preserving this building. There are a lot of ways the building can contribute to the city of Fredericksburg.”

The event included a presentation by Lee Shadbolt, an architect with Commonwealth Architects in Richmond, of one idea that Perroy and his wife, Deborah, had considered doing themselves, only to shelve it after the 9/11 terrorist attacks: to turn their property into a boutique hotel.
