Over 35 Tons of Paper Shredded at BBB’s 11th Annual Shred Day

Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland shredded more than 35 tons of documents unloaded from 1,812 vehicles on Saturday, April 28th at its 11th Annual Shred Day.

The free event is part of a national effort to reduce identity theft and was held at the Maryland State Fairgrounds and IKEA Baltimore. It is also BBB Maryland Foundation’s primary fundraiser. Nearly 35 tons of paper were destroyed and recycled and donations in excess of $4,600 were collected to benefit the 501(c) 3 charity.

“We had another amazing turnout at Shred Day 2018,” remarked Angie Barnett, president/CEO of BBB of Greater Maryland. “For more than a decade, this event has drawn out people who’ve shared personal, and painful, encounters with identity theft. I’m proud that we can provide this service and continue hosting initiatives that bring the community together on important issues.”

BBB Shred Day event partner, Iron Mountain, supplied a fleet of nine mobile shred trucks, and a team of professional technicians from several states, to shred on site at both locations. In the end, 100 percent of the paper collected is recycled. The event, which was open to the public and business community, has grown in popularity over the years from humble beginnings at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.

“BGE’s top priority is always the safety and security of its customers and employees. Helping to prevent identity theft goes hand-in-hand with our mission so we were pleased to support this effort,” said Valencia McClure, vice president of governmental and external affairs and corporate relations for BGE. “More than a dozen BGE employees volunteered for this event as part of a series of events throughout National Volunteer Month. They not only helped BBB educate people about identity theft, but also took a step forward in tree conservation.”

“I want to personally thank Angie and BBB for conducting this event,” said Josie Porterfield, who visited the Timonium site. “Despite the fact that there were 100 cars in front of me, I was through the line and leaving shortly after 8 o’clock. The organization was impressive and everyone I encountered could not have been more helpful and engaging.”

Participants received identity theft prevention tips and sponsor giveaways. Sponsors included Affordable Basement Waterproofing Inc., BGE, Chesapeake Employers' Insurance Company, EZShield, GTL Remodeling, Horizon Services, Iron Mountain, MD Waterproofing & Radon Reduction, Strategic Factory, Tar Heel Construction Group, Von Paris Moving & Storage, and WBALTV.
