Bass, Berry & Sims Adds Michael L. Kiklis in Washington, D.C. Office

Bass, Berry & Sims PLC is pleased to announce the addition of Michael L. Kiklis as a member in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Kiklis joins the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology practice, bringing 25 years of experience representing clients in patent matters, including litigation and trials at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Kiklis has been involved in approximately 100 PTAB trials, serving as lead counsel in a vast majority of those cases, and also handles appeals to the Federal Circuit. He has an extensive background in computer science based on his prior work as a software developer at some of the computer industry’s leading companies.

“Mike brings a deep knowledge of the business and legal challenges our clients may face, especially in the technology space, informed by years of hands-on experience counseling clients through nearly every type of patent matter,” said Todd Rolapp, managing partner at Bass, Berry & Sims. “Mike’s extensive experience in PTAB litigation adds depth to our comprehensive IP practice.”

Kiklis represents clients in a wide range of patent matters, ranging from bet-the-company PTAB trials and patent litigation to cross-licensing and due diligence. He frequently serves as lead counsel in inter partes review and covered business method patent review proceedings and coordinates concurrent or multiple proceedings related to the same patent. He also assists clients in enforcing and defending their intellectual property rights related to patent infringement in alternative dispute resolution forums, district courts, and the Federal Circuit.

Kiklis is a frequent speaker and author providing influential thought leadership on patent law, including patentable subject matter and PTAB trials. He is the author of The Supreme Court on Patent Law, which is an 800-page treatise devoted to the Supreme Court’s patent law jurisprudence.

Kiklis earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Massachusetts – Lowell, his master’s degree from Boston University and his law degree from the Syracuse University College of Law.
