OTJ Architects announces the launch of a new studio headed by award-winning architect Gary F. Martinez, FAIA who joins OTJ as a Partner and Director. At OTJ he will continue to specialize in the design of cultural and performing arts centers, as well as commercial office buildings. Among his many notable projects have been the Cincinnati Music Hall, the Boston Opera House, and the Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Center in El Paso, TX. At OTJ, Mr. Martinez’s team includes many of the accomplished architects and interior design professionals he worked with at his prior firm, Martinez + Johnson Architecture.

Lance Jaccard, OTJ Managing Partner, notes, “Gary and his team both complement and broaden the services we can offer clients in Washington, D.C., New York, N.Y., and nationwide. We are now poised to fully integrate the design and delivery of commercial building and interior projects, while maintaining the studio structure and hands-on partner leadership, which have long been the hallmarks of our success.”

Mr. Martinez’s work in and around New York City has had a profound impact on many theatrical and cultural arenas, with a portfolio that encompasses restoration projects for such landmark venues as the Hudson Theatre in Times Square and the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. He and his studio were also responsible for several acclaimed preservation projects, including Tarrytown Music Hall in Tarrytown, NY, and Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ. In New York City, however, he is also renowned for the design of the very contemporary NFL Experience in Times Square.

In Washington, Mr. Martinez is currently working on a new 10-story trophy office building at 2100 L Street, which is being developed by Akridge in partnership with COPT and the Argos Group. At OTJ, his studio will also continue its work on the National Center for Latino Culture and Performing Arts project in San Antonio, TX as well as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C.

Beyond his reputation as a highly regarded commercial and cultural design architect, Mr. Martinez has long been a sought-after lecturer and speaker on such topics as 21st century theatrical venue design and the relationship between sustainable design and existing urban infrastructure. He has been spotlighted on NPR’s Theatre Arts program and has served as a sponsor of the “Green Building Historic Preservation Symposium” in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Martinez joins OTJ at a time when the interior architecture and design firm recently completed Washington Metropolitan area projects for such clients as Yelp, Adobe, Sands Capital Management, Darden School of Business, The Aspen Institute, and Alarm.com. In New York, OTJ is designing projects for Cultural Vistas, FHI 360, and Brookfield Partners.
