Lorien Health Services Earns Gold in National Tech Competition

10/9/19

Top senior care industry publication, McKnight’s, recognizes Lorien with the Gold Award in quality.

Lorien Health Services, a family-owned nursing home, assisted living, rehabilitation and residential services company, received the top award nationally from McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards. Lorien’s emphasis on quality care won the company Gold in the skilled care division of the annual competition.

McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards recognize long-term care operators who demonstrate how technology has improved care and operations.

According to McKnight’s Long-Term Care News, a business news magazine serving the institutional long-term care field, organizers fielded a record number of entries this year, which were judged by a national, independent panel of long-term care and senior living experts and stakeholders.

“Lorien’s robust telemedicine program and other innovative technologies help to provide the best care to every resident,” Lou Grimmel, CEO of Lorien Health Services, told the magazine.

McKnight’s highlighted Lorien’s telemedicine program, which played a role this year in the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services ranking of Lorien’s Bel Air, MD, facility in the first tier for value. The program, which first got underway in 2015 as a Maryland Health Care Commission funded pilot project between the facility and the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health Center, allows a resident, accompanied by a certified nurse practitioner, to see and talk to attending physicians at the hospital or emergency department. It has resulted in a 34% reduction in 30-day hospital readmissions.

“Every Lorien employee sees our residents as somebody’s mom, somebody’s dad — somebody’s prized possession, and we had better take care of them,” Grimmel added.

Lorien’s other innovative advancements were also recognized by the industry publication, including its telehealth program, Lorien at Home, for people outside its facilities. This program incorporates Lorien Link, which uses a tablet and connected peripherals, such as a blood pressure cuff, to gather patient data. Lorien also rolled out Real Time Medical Systems, which manages and monitors clinical alerts, to all its facilities. In January, Lorien launched CareConnection, which provides immediate and automated vitals, and reduces or eliminates errors that come with manual entries, at its Mt. Airy, MD, facility.

Lorien Health Services operates nursing home and assisted living facilities in Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, and Howard counties. The company also offers Lorien at Home and Lorien Rehabilitation and Fitness services as an extension of the communities.
