Culture and Community Take Center Stage at Hotel Revival’s Black History Month Celebration

Property-wide activities include art installations and conversations throughout February

Throughout Black History Month, Hotel Revival, a Joie de Vivre hotel located in the heart of Baltimore’s historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, in partnership with Kiss Tomorrow Hello, will host a series of activities designed to bring culture and community together.

“It is our hope that when people step into Hotel Revival that they feel it’s a space where they can engage, interact and be their authentic selves,” said Donte Johnson, general manager of Hotel Revival. “We are proud to partner with this incredible group of people and organizations for this effort and we invite the community to join us in our celebration of these notable individuals.”

During the month of February, Hotel Revival will host the following:

February 1-29: Black History Month Art Exhibition

Throughout the month of February, art and photography by five emerging local black artists— Ernest Shaw, Monica Ikegwu, Lia Latty, Nikia Kigler and Phylicia Ghee—will be on display in Topside, Hotel Revival’s rooftop restaurant and bar, for guests to view.

February 4 from 6-9 p.m.: Black History Month Artist Talk

The artists mentioned above will host a discussion in the hotel’s rooftop Garden Room and share their stories and inspirations behind their artwork. This event is free and open to the public.

February 8-29: The Baltimore Times Archive Installation

The Baltimore Times, a publication committed to delivering informative, inspirational and empowering stories to Maryland’s African American community, will provide a look into Baltimore’s black history by displaying past images and headlines on the second floor of Hotel Revival, as well as in the hotel’s Friday Evening Room from Feb. 8-29. Additionally, the February 2020 edition of the paper will be available for visitors to take home with them.

Tuesday, February 11 from 6-9 p.m.: Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle (LBS) Baltimore Discussion

Adam Jackson, CEO of LBS Baltimore, will host a discussion about the socio-eco-political issues surrounding recreational cannabis in the black community in the hotel’s Garden Room. Additionally, the Topside bar team will offer CBD-infused cocktails to guests during the discussion. The CBD will be provided by Colorado-based manufacturer, Be Jubie. This discussion is free and open to the public.

February 18 from 6-8 p.m.: The Baltimore Times Discussion

A representative from The Baltimore Times will be onsite to discuss the history of the newspaper and the archives on display in the hotel. All visitors of the hotel are welcome and encouraged to attend the conversation in the Friday Evening Room. Attendees will also receive a printed takeaway featuring information about the history and story of The Baltimore Times.

February 29 from 4-6 p.m.: Hue Society Presents BLK Fluence Wine & Chat

Guests will experience a black-owned wine tasting led by celebrated sommelier and founder of Hue Society Tahiirah Habibi followed by a fireside chat with three local black wine makers, Donae Burston of La Fête Rosé, Marcus Johnson of FLO Wines and Rodney Foster of Edellheiss Wines. During the chat, guests will be offered a full glass of their preferred wine. Following the tasting and discussion, there will be light bites available, as well as music and mingling. Attendees will also have the opportunity to purchase the wines available during the event from the hotel. This event costs $25 and includes the tastings, snacks, and one glass of wine during the panel discussion.

Hotel Revival has engaged Jason Bass, of Kiss Tomorrow Hello, as its “culture curator” to identify and curate the programming for this monthlong effort and others moving forward.
