Gilchrist to Host Third Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Virtual Celebration

3/16/21

--Honoring the brave men and women who served during the Vietnam War—

Gilchrist will be hosting their third annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration virtually, on Sunday, March 28, at 3 p.m. This FREE celebration will offer all Vietnam War veterans and their loved ones a day of much-deserved healing. Over 12% of Gilchrist’s hospice patients are veterans, some of which served during the Vietnam War era. Gilchrist’s Welcome Home Celebration aims to honor the veterans in their care and across the nation, recognize the unique needs of these veterans and thank them for their sacrifice and service.

On March 30, 2015, Governor Hogan signed his first bill into law making March 30 “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration” in the state of Maryland. To honor this day appropriately for the Vietnam veterans and their families, Gilchrist has hosted three celebrations, with over 1,500 people in attendance, over the past several years.

For this year’s event, Gilchrist has invited Jan Scruggs, founder of the Vietnam War Memorial, to attend, and the celebration will include patriotic music, a salute from our active-duty military from Fort George G. Meade, as well as two special guests; Joseph Lee Galloway, one of America’s premier war and foreign correspondents and co-author of “We Were Soldiers Once …And Young”; and Kimberly Mitchell, president and CEO of Veterans Village of San Diego, a nationally recognized leader in serving homeless military veterans and providing treatment programs to 2,000+ residents annually.

Gilchrist, a part of the GBMC HealthCare System, is a nonprofit organization that provides care, counseling and support for people with serious illness through the end of life. Annually, Gilchrist provides elder medical care to 7,500 individuals, hospice care to 5,400 patients and grief counseling and bereavement services to 6,500 family members. The organization also counsels’ individuals on care planning, guiding them through decisions about their treatment and helping them make informed choices for their advanced chronic disease.
