Eric Gertler, co-chairman of U.S. News & World Report and co-chairman and co-publisher of the New York Daily News, has been honored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York as a 2017 Great Immigrant. In its annual tribute to their founder, Scottish immigrant Andrew Carnegie, the philanthropic foundation recognizes naturalized citizens who demonstrate the richness of talent, skills and achievements that immigrants from around the world bring to every sphere of American society.
This year's distinguished class of Great Immigrants selected by Carnegie Corporation of New Yorkincludes:

"I am honored to be among this group of distinguished individuals," said Gertler. "The journeys of immigrants and their contributions are central to the overall American story. The richness of our culture and heritage as well as our strength as a nation are inextricably linked to our openness as a society and our history of being a place that welcomes others."
Gertler, who has been co-chairman of U.S. News since last year, became an American citizen shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attack.
Born in Montreal, Canada, Gertler lived in the United States after graduating from Brown Universityand then continuously as a permanent resident under green card status prior to gaining his citizenship. Among his many accomplishments, Gertler successfully led several technology and media companies, serving as CEO of Privista and PrimeAxis Media, among others, and as president of U.S.News, Fast Company and The Atlantic.
Most recently, Gertler served as executive vice president of the New York City Economic Development Corporation and as managing director of the Center for Economic Transformation under both Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Mayor Bill de Blasio. In this role, he was responsible for spurring economic development through programs that promoted industry growth, with an emphasis on innovation, job creation, public-private partnerships, investment funds and industry diversification. He oversaw over 100 initiatives to further these goals and also directed hundreds of millions of dollars of city investments into the local economy.
Gertler is the author of the critically acclaimed book Prying Eyes: Protect Your Privacy From People Who Sell To You, Snoop on You or Steal From You (Random House). He holds degrees from the Sorbonne at the University of Paris, the Institut D'Etudes Politiques in Paris and a law degree from American University, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Law Review.
